Turquoise was sacred to the Egyptian goddess Hathor (Venus) and imbued with her protective magic. For thousands of years, the desert peoples of the Sinai traded turquoise beads. Sacred also to the Aztecs and native peoples of the Americas, according to Pueblo legend, Turquoise stole its color from the sky and represents humanity’s cosmic origins. In the language of gemstones, Turquoise symbolizes cheerfulness of the soul. Universally regarded as a bringer of peace and good luck, it was considered a potent antidote to the evil eye and a fortunate stone for actors and singers.

An Arabic proverb states, “A turquoise given by a loving hand carries with it happiness and good fortune.” Hindu tradition says if you set eyes on a Turquoise on the day after seeing the new moon, you will enjoy immeasurable wealth. The powers of abundance and protection feature strongly in legends surrounding this stone. Horses’ bridles were set with Turquoise to ensure no accidents befell the riders—the stone was believed to absorb any harm directed toward the wearer.

In the Middle Ages, Turquoise was used to heal sore throats and headaches and was said to lose its color in the presence of illness. According to early crystal lore, drinking Turquoise-infused water alleviated urine retention. Today it is said to strengthen the immune system and subtle meridians, regenerate tissue, and encourage assimilation of nutrients. A pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, it may aid cramps, arthritis, and similar dis-eases. Wear Turquoise to alleviate physical or mental exhaustion or to lift depression caused by difficult circumstances.

Turquoise exemplifies the homeopathic principle “like heals like,” that is, a substance given in an infinitesimal “energetic signature” dose alleviates a condition it would cause if given in a large dose. It contains phosphoric acid, which in a large dose would sear the throat, but for thousands of years, gentle Turquoise has been prescribed to soothe sore throats. Turquoise also contains traces of iron, noted for its protective qualities, and copper, prized for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Turquoise lets you explore past lives to find the primary source of a martyred attitude or self-sabotage. If you are pessimistic, it teaches you to focus on solutions rather than problems or the past. This stone dispels negative belief patterns and removes toxic energy, reminding you that you are a spiritual being who happens to be having a human learning experience.

Placed over the throat chakra, Turquoise releases inhibitions and vows from the past that prevent you from fully expressing yourself.
