Tool 19: Cleansing with Smoke
Protection Tools

Cleansing with smoke is yet another ancient tool for space clearing — there are pictures in Egyptian temples of fragrant smoke being wafted to cleanse the space and this is still done today in churches through incense. You can use joss sticks, incense or dried herbs such as sage, artemesia or sweetgrass, or burn frankincense in an oil burner (but never leave an oil burner unattended). It’s traditional to use a feather to waft the smoke in the four directions — north, south, east and west — or around a body, but you can gently blow it if you prefer (be careful if blowing near an oil burner, as the candle may flare up). Remember to hold your intention as you waft the smoke around the area.

TRY THIS

Light a joss stick and walk slowly around a room, blowing the smoke gently around the space, paying special attention to the corners, behind the furniture and so on.

Crystal Tip for Cleansing

Sulphur used to be burned as a room cleanser, particularly after illness, but the smoke is quite noxious and it’s better simply to place the crystal in the room and ask it to cleanse the energies. (Remember to wash your hands after handling it.) Halite also works well.
