The Signs of The Zodiac
Additional Components for Lunar Magic
The twelve signs of the zodiac are based on the passage of the Sun and provide energy alignments that can be used in lunar magic. Some systems utilize the thirteenth sign of Ophiuchus (O-foo’ kus), the Serpent Bearer, which is a sign normally ignored, although it was used by Nostradamus and others in astrology and is said to date back to Sumerian usage. Called the thirteenth sign of the zodiac, it actually falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius, but even this fluctuates according to the ecliptic (path) of the Sun. Because the Sun only passes through the foot of the Serpent Bearer, most astrologers dismiss it as unimportant. It regained significance with the approach of the year 2012, when the Mayan calendar ends with the Winter Solstice alignment of the earth and the Dark Rift (or black hole) of the Galactic Center through Ophiuchus.
In the following list, the symbol and name of the ruling sun sign is followed by that of the ruling planet of the sign, the sign’s starting degree in the twelve-sign zodiac by Tropical dates based on the equinoxes and solstices on the earth, and in parentheses the Sidereal dates based on the constellations. Use this list to determine your zodiac (Sun) sign and ruling planet for magical works in the next two parts of the book.
