Paranoia Spread

On This Day

During the War of the Worlds broadcast, some listeners poured into the streets, some headed to church, and others ran to spend their last hours with friends and family.

Orson Wells broadcasts the radio play of H. G. Wells’s War of the Worlds on this night in 1938. Amidst the tensions and anxiety leading up to World War II, some listeners thought it was a real news broadcast, especially the ones who missed parts of it. Thinking the earth was being invaded by aliens, real-life panic ensued.

Her blanket is covered in astrological symbols, representing myriad narratives that lie outside her mind. It is a reminder that while everyone faces fear and uncertainty, it is important not to become immobilized by it.
