Speakeasies, places illegally selling alcohol, were called this due to the fact one would often have to whisper a password to get inside. Once inside, guests were asked to “speak easy” so as not to make too much noise and alert the authorities to its existence.
Wine and spirit lovers, rejoice: today marks the “soft opening” of the repeal of Prohibition. On this day in 1933, FDR signed an act so that manufacturers could legally produce and sell beer of 3.2 percent alcohol.
