The Magic of Trees: A Guide to Their Sacred Wisdom & Metaphysical Properties - Tess Whitehurst 2017

The Trees

Ihave spent many precious hours among the pines in the Sierra Nevada mountains, inhaling their delicious scent and absorbing their wisdom of eternal serenity. A veritable synonym of refreshment and comfort, the very word pine invokes a sense that all is right with the world.

Please note that there are many different types of pines in the pine family (genus Pinus) that thrive in many different regions. For individual pine species, you may want to do your own fieldwork to discover the unique energetic properties they possess. Please also note that this section excludes the pines in the pinyon family, which may be found in the “Pinyon” section.

Magical Uses

When clarity is desired—particularly around the topic of finances—the scent of pine can be a great boon. Retreat to a cabin among the pines, take a walk in a pine forest, or simply inhale or diffuse pine needle essential oil. You might also anoint your wallet, bank statement, or other financial documents with essential oil of pine in order to bring clarity about what to do or how to proceed.

Essentially, pine clears away what doesn’t serve you, both mentally and physically. In addition to promoting mental clarity, pine is employed in aromatherapy to help clear congestion and to improve respiration and circulation. Diffuse the essential oil in your space or waft a bottle under your nose to receive these benefits.

If you desire clear insight into the topic of finances, mix a few drops of pine needle essential oil into a small amount of olive oil on a Thursday or a Sunday when the moon is between new and full. Carve the words “Clarity, Energy, Abundance” into a green pillar candle and anoint it with the oil blend. Light it, and safely burn it at intervals until it’s burned all the way down. Once it’s cooled, dispose of any remaining wax.

Divine Harmony

According to author Joy N. Hulme in Wild Fibonacci: Nature’s Secret Code Revealed, the number of pine needles in a bundle and the number of spirals in a pinecone—like so many naturally occurring patterns—are arranged according to the famed Fibonacci sequence (i.e., a sequence of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding it). A prominent feature of sacred geometry, the Fibonacci sequence is related to the golden ratio and has been considered since time immemorial to be an important key to the harmony and structure of the universe.

Additionally, pines can live extremely long lives. In the presence of a very old pine, one feels closer to eternity. In fact, a small number of Great Basin bristlecone pines in California (in the Methuselah Grove of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest) are the world’s oldest living trees at around 5,000 years old.

Simply spending time in the presence of a pine or spending time in an area where pines grow in abundance can confer a sense of harmony, wholeness, eternity, and loving divine presence. One can also magically bring in the energy of divine harmony by lovingly gathering pinecones in a basket or a bowl and placing them on an altar or elsewhere in the home. Add a dash of divine harmony to any dish by performing the following.

Toast pine nuts in a dry skillet over low heat until golden brown. As you do so, call on the Divine in a way that feels powerful for you. Visualize the pine nuts glowing and pulsating with golden white light of divine harmony and balance. Cool to room temperature and sprinkle over any dish, sweet or savory, to bless the diners with the energy of divine harmony and the added benefit of deliciousness!

As ancient cultures all over the world were well aware, the scent of pine supports physical healing. Bring in a bowl of lightly crushed pine needles or diffuse the essential oil to support yourself or others while healing from any illness or injury. According to authors PJ Pierson and Mary Shipley in Aromatherapy for Everyone, pine needle essential oil can specifically help with a wide range of issues, including asthma, bronchitis, colds, flu, coughs, digestive problems, hangovers, nervous exhaustion, rheumatism, and sore throats.

Employ the scent of pine to energetically purify any room or area. Do this by diffusing the essential oil, misting with spring water into which you’ve added ten to twenty drops of the essential oil, or lightly crushing fresh pine needles and placing them around the space.

Releasing Guilt

Pine flower essence (one of the original thirty-eight Bach Flower Remedies) is employed to alleviate constant thoughts and feelings of guilt and self-blame, as well as the tendency to over-apologize. For this purpose, try two to three drops under the tongue or in water, three times per day for at least one month. As reinforcement, or if you prefer to employ the essence in one fell swoop, add forty drops of the flower essence to your bathwater.

And, if you’re plagued by guilt about a specific action or situation, you might try the following:

Visit a pine tree in a remote location or somewhere you’re sure you won’t be disturbed. Hold a glass or an open bottle of water in both hands, relax, and center yourself while gazing at the tree. When you feel ready, confess the whole thing to the tree. Speak aloud and wring it all out: everything that you’ve been holding on to and feeling guilty about. Cry if you need to, and allow yourself to move through any feelings that come up. When this feels thoroughly complete, pour the water around the base of the tree. Feel your load lightening as the tree takes your burden and transforms it into nourishing compost. Notice how forgiving the tree is, and how much lighter you feel. As a gesture of thanks, give the tree a big hug. Then walk away without looking back.
